TURBOCAM Europe Supports Diving Program for Disadvantaged Young People

30-Jan-2012 – Fareham, Hampshire (UK) – TURBOCAM Europe, a division of TURBOCAM International, is proud to announce their sponsorship of a group of young people from Gosport who will take part in a scuba diving course to start in February.  Following the success of an alternative learning program delivered last year, further funding has been given to extend the provision.

Some of the kids who completed the dive program.During 2011, 16 youths completed their Professional Association of Diving Instructors’ (PADI) Advanced Open Water qualification. The course was designed to give those who would never normally have the opportunity to take part in such an activity to achieve not only a dive qualification, but also General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) equivalency certificates.

Funding for the courses came from TURBOCAM Europe Ltd. (TEL) and Gosport Extended Service's FLASH Fund. Both companies have been extremely supportive and see the benefit that diving can have. It encourages and increases self-confidence and the ability to promote team work and communications within a group.

TEL funded the Advanced Course and a boat trip through their Giving Panel. They wanted to support something different and worthwhile for local young people. The trip was on the Wightdiver, a 38ft/11.5m Cygnus Revenge hardboat out of Portsmouth, to explore the Mulberry Harbor unit near Selsey and to then look for fossilized shark's teeth in Bracklesham Bay. Everyone came away with shark's teeth as a keepsake of the day.

TEL Engineer Kevin Ciorra went on the Wightdiver trip and was amazed at the positive attitudes and teamwork of the young people on the boat. "Some of these kids do not have backgrounds that would normally allow them to do this type of activity. The boat was filled with smiles and they even gave me a thank-you card at the end of the day."
